I shot mostly available light this year, but kept a radio-triggered strobe on a boom for the darker areas.

It looks like the strobist movement has caught on with cosplay photographers now! It's like suddenly everyone has a light stand or some other kind of off-camera flash setup. I was tempted to use a light stand myself, but my umbrellas are way too big to use in a con. I'll definitely need a little softbox or something for next time.
